Please join the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans for our first meeting of 2012 on January 12th at SweetBones Alabama. The guest speaker this month will be Chuck Malone, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Chuck Malone graduated from the Cumberland School of Law on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham and practiced law for 20 years before being elected to the bench. As a successful attorney, he handled cases in both state and federal courts and represented individuals, small businesses, corporations, banks, and credit unions.

Chief Justice Malone is a lifelong Republican who was first elected to the bench in 2000 as a circuit judge and was re-elected in 2006. His colleagues twice elected him as presiding judge which gave him responsibility for the management of the courts. In more than a decade on the bench, Malone earned the reputation of being a tough but fair judge while presiding over thousands of criminal cases including capital murder, rape, sexual abuse and drug trafficking. In addition to his vast experience in criminal law, Chief Justice Malone also presided over all types of civil cases including medical malpractice, product liability, fraud, breach of contract, and accident cases.

In 2010, Governor Robert Bentley appointed Malone as Chief of Staff where he served as the senior most adviser to the administration. On August 1, 2011, Governor Bentley announced that he had appointed Chuck Malone as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

Our candidate, Dickie Drake, spent 42 years serving his country in the United State Air Force, and now he wants to serve our state as a principled legislator. He is an honest conservative that believes lower taxes and less spending are the best ways to get our economy back on track.

His opponent is a liberal Democrat that wants to continue the policies of Barack Obama: more wasteful government spending and higher taxes. The difference has never been more clear. In order to get Dickie Drake elected, we are going to need your help. The Democrats have promised to do whatever it takes to win this race, and our efforts have to be just as strong. In fact, Democrats all over the state are utilizing Obama’s Organizing for America platform to make tens of thousands of call into the district for Paige. They have the head-start, and now we need to ratchet up our efforts!

Your commitment to go door-to-door will make the difference. Voters will respond to the message that we have had enough of the liberal democrats and their policies that are making our economy worse.

Whether a GBYR member or not, please join us on Saturday November 19th and help ensure that Dickie Drake becomes the newest Alabama State Representative.

Please join the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans for our October meeting on October 13th at SweetBones Alabama. The guest speaker this month will be John McMillan, Alabama’s State Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries.

Commissioner John McMillan comes to the Department of Agriculture & Industries with a legacy of perseverance and purpose. For six generations, his family has worked the land and enjoyed the natural resources of Alabama.

His longstanding commitment to public service, preserving the environment, and economic development make him a natural fit for the challenges he will embrace as the department’s new commissioner for the next four years.

McMillan grew up in Baldwin County in the same house in Stockton where his 99 year-old mother, Madie, still lives surrounded by family. After attending Stockton School and Baldwin County High School, McMillan attended Rhodes College where he earned a BA in economics. He met his wife Kathryn in high school and they celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this past July.

His interest in agriculture began at a young age while working on his uncle’s farm and in his father’s sawmill. After college, he continued to work at the family sawmill for nearly 20 years. Over the years, McMillan’s life’s work continued to focus on agri-business, forest products, wildlife protection, natural resource management and the protection of private property rights.

His first venture into public service was in 1969 when Governor Albert Brewer appointed him to a vacancy on the Baldwin County Commission. He fell in love with public service and decided to run for State Representative in 1974. After being elected that year and re-elected in 1978, he was able to serve on the State Administration Committee and chaired the Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Committee. While in the legislature, McMillan was twice chosen as the “Conservation Legislator of the Year.”

Governor Fob James appointed McMillan as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Some of his accomplishments include being able to play a major role in rebuilding Gulf State Park after Hurricane Frederick, passing legislation to protect Alabama’s wildlife and fisheries resources, and being responsible for the $449 million dollar offshore oil and gas leases which led to the establishment of the Alabama Trust Fund.

In 1983, McMillan was given the opportunity to work for the Alabama Forestry Association and in 1986 was selected to direct the association as its Executive Vice President for the next 20 years. There, he became known as a protector of landowners’ property rights and a champion against property tax increases.

McMillan has also served as Chairman of the North Baldwin United Way and President of the Bay Minette Area Chamber of Commerce and the Bay Minette Kiwanis Club. Besides an enthusiasm for community and public service, McMillan loves all types of hunting, fishing and enjoying nature.

He and Kathryn have two sons, Murphy and William, and a daughter-in-law Beth. Murphy and Beth are the parents of their two grandchildren, El, 11 and John, 6.

Jackie Curtiss was elected the National Committeewoman for the Young Republican Federation of Alabama in May of 2011 and she also serves on the Finance Committee for the Young Republican National Federation.

Jackie is a prolific fundraiser and has already raised over $25,000 for the YRFA since being elected.

She played an instrumental role recently in helping the YRFA to win the bid to host the YRNF 2013 Convention, which will be held in the summer of 2013 in Mobile, Alabama.

She also has served as State Committeewoman for the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans since November of 2009. In 2009, Jackie registered more voters than any other member of the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans.

Since joining the Young Republicans, Jackie can frequently be seen going door to door for Republican candidates all over Alabama including for fellow Young Republicans and Senators (as well as former Rising Republican Stars), Clay Scofield (SD 9, Arab) and Bryan Taylor (SD 30, Prattville).

She also logged in several hours making calls at the phone banks set up for several Jefferson County candidates in 2010.

Please join the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans for our September meeting on September 8th at SweetBones Alabama. The guest speaker this month will be Alabama State Senator Scott Beason of Gardendale. This will be his first public speaking engagement for Senator Beason since the recent corruption trial in which he exposed massive corruption in Montgomery, so this will be a meeting you won’t want to miss!

Senator Beason is a longtime supporter, and former member, of the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans. Senator Beason and his wife, Lori, and their three children; Keller, Merritt, and McCalan, are members of Gardendale’s First Baptist Church.

Senator Beason has been a conservative champion in the legislature for over a decade. Elected as a State Representative in 1998, he was consistently recognized as the most conservative member of the House. Elected to the State Senate in 2006, he continues to stand up for conservative principles and conservative ideals.

Senator Beason has also been a champion of securing Alabama’s borders. He took the lead in Alabama’s legislation to enforce the immigration laws the federal government will not. While local and national media continue to mislead the public about the legislation, Senator Beason continues to set the record straight as seen in his recent USA Today oped: http://usat.ly/BeasonUSAToday

Senator Beason also has been champion of ending the corrupt practices that have plagued Montgomery for decades. After being approached by lobbyist who wanted to pay him to vote a certain way, he went to the FBI to end this corruption. Even though he knew it could mean sacrificing his own safety and career, he did what was morally right and ethically sound. The combination of championing ethics and the enforcement of immigration laws led the New York Times to do a profile on him this July: http://nyti.ms/BeasonProfile

Please join us September 8th as we welcome a Great Senator and a Great Alabamian, Scott Beason.
